exploring Where Metabolic Health Meets Mental Wellbeing

Metabolic Psychology explores the powerful link between metabolism and mental health. Emerging research shows that metabolic disruptions such as chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and poor insulin control—may contribute to psychiatric conditions and brain disorders. Targeting these factors offers new hope to relieve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.

Our approach focuses on how metabolic improvements enhance brain function, emphasising reduced intake of refined sugars, ultra-processed foods, and simple carbohydrates. This integrated strategy can help patients whose conditions have been historically undertreated by optimising both metabolic and mental health.

what is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body uses fat instead of glucose (sugar) as its primary energy source. When carbohydrate intake is significantly reduced, the liver breaks down fat into ketones, which fuel the brain and body. This shift enhances energy efficiency, supports mental clarity, and offers therapeutic benefits for various conditions.

Therapeutic Ketogenic Diets

Medical literature outlines five Ketogenic Diet variations, effective for conditions like epilepsy, bipolar disorder, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Developed in 1923 by Dr Russell Wilder, the classic Ketogenic Diet uses a 4:1 ratio—90% fat, 6% protein, and 4% carbohydrates—to induce ketosis.

Ketosis occurs when the body shifts from using glucose to fat as its primary fuel source. By reducing carbohydrate intake, the liver depletes its glucose stores and begins converting fat into ketones—powerful compounds that fuel the brain and body while offering therapeutic benefits. Variations of the Ketogenic Diet maintain high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate principles, with adjusted ratios to suit specific needs.
